I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember- always interested in color, form, design and materials. But it was only around thirty years ago that ceramics became my main focus. I was delighted to have
discovered an art form that combines so many different techniques, skills and traditions. It’s an art that offers a whole world of possibilities to the experienced artisan and curious artist alike. Ceramics is so unique because it is at the same time a fine art and a
practical object used in daily life. No doubt everyone can appreciate
the utility of a ceramic tray as well as its beauty. A ceramic wall
applique stands out illuminated or not. A set of plates can bring
warmth to a dinner table as well as culture and tradition. Wall
decorations in ceramic give detail to a home as well as share the
ideas and dreams of the artist that made them. It is true that all
artistic mediums are multifaceted, but I believe that ceramics in
particular has a variety of uses that is truly unique in the art
world. In the successive articles we will delve into the history and
techniques of this thousand year old art form, in the experience of
the artists and artisans who committed their life’s work to
ceramics.
